Wasps

Wasps are distinguishable from bees by their pointed lower abdomens and the narrow “waist,” called a petiole, that separates the abdomen from the thorax.

Bees

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, known for their role in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. As a protected species, we will have them removed but but not exterminated.

Flies

Flies are insects with a pair of functional wings for flight and a pair of specialized hindwings called halteres for balance.

Hornets

Q: How do I get rid of carpenter bees?

Carpenter bees chew tunnels in wood to make a nest cavity in which their larvae can grow. To prevent the bees from making the holes, staining or painting the surface will help deter them.

If the holes are already present, a dust product may be applied into the holes and then the surrounding wood treated with a liquid spray product. Such treatments may need to be repeated after a couple of months to further deter the bees.

Q: How do I know if I have flies or gnats?

Since both require different methods of treatment, it is critical to identify whether you’re battling gnats or fruit flies. If the insect is brown with red eyes, it is most likely a fruit fly. Fruit flies breed in fresh fruit – especially bananas – and garbage.

If the insect is tiny and black with long wings and spindly legs, it is likely a fungus gnat that lives in the wet soil of potted plants.
